The Philosophy of Rudolf Carnap

چکیده

Entities A particular source of opposition to Carnap's semantic methods arises from the use of abstract entities such as classes, properties, and numbers, many philosphers feeling that such use depends upon demonstration that these abstract entities "do actually exist". Carnap regarded such questions as metaphysical and hence senseless, but they were raised by anti-metaphysical empiricists. Carnap's paper "Empiricism, Semantics and Ontology" ([Carnap50] ) describes his position in repect of abstract objects. It introduces the distinction between internal and external ontological questions.

Carnap, Logicism, and Ontological Commitment1

Throughout most of his career, Rudolf Carnap attempted to articulate an empiricist view. Central to this project is the understanding of how empiricism can be made compatible with abstract objects that seem to be invoked in mathematics. In this paper, I discuss and critically evaluate three moves made by Carnap to accommodate mathematical talk within his empiricist program: (i) the “weak logici...

Developments in Logic: Carnap, Gödel, and Tarski

Analytic philosophy and modern logic are intimately connected, both historically and systematically. Thinkers such as Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein were major contributors to the early development of both; and the fruitful use of modern logic in addressing philosophical problems was, and still is, definitive for large parts of the analytic tradition. More specifically, Frege's analysis of th...

A distinguishing feature of analytic philosophy, or at least of one central strand in it, is the use of modern logic for the purpose of clarifying and solving philosophical problems. Directly and strongly influenced by Russell, Carnap passed on this influence to legions of later philo...

The Development of the Hintikka Program

One of the highlights of the Second International Congress for Logic, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science, held in Jerusalem in 1964, was Jaakko Hintikka’s lecture “Towards a Theory of Inductive Generalization” (see [Hintikka, 1965a]). Two years later Hintikka published a two-dimensional continuum of inductive probability measures (see Hintikka, 1966), and ten years later he announced an axi...
